After logon windows explorer.exe process crashes and gets restarted in an infinite loop stopping you from using the machine. If you do a Ctrl+Alt+Del it is possible to ‘End Task’ on the Explorer.exe process and stop the error messages.

This problem can be caused by a corrupted shortcut on the desktop of the users profile. If you log on using another user account the computer works fine.

You need to remove the invalid shortcut on the affected profile. In my case the corrupted shortcut was the most recently created file which had been created with a .MAF extension

To remove this file you can

A)     Use a CMD prompt as the working user and CD to the affected profile’s desktop and delete the most recent file(s)

or

B)      Boot from a MSDART disk and remove the file
