The Mitsubishi iCar is a futureistic looking 4 seater car. I think of it like a 'Strech Smart Car' or basically what the Smart For Four should have been.

The footprint of this car is very small and the inside space is deceptively large. Overall the car is 3.4m long and 2.5m wide. This complies to the Japanese 'Kei Car' standard as it is pushed along by a 660cc three cylinder engine with a Turbo.

Although the iCar has such a small engine I believe it is an ideal island car. The driving position is high and because the engine is under the boot it has a short nose. This makes it easy to see left and right when you pull up to a junction with low walls either side. Because the iCar is so narrow it is also very good for driving down small lanes.

I've driven the iCar in the UK several times and the maximum speed of 85mph isn't too much of an issue. because it is so small and light it will never be as planted on the road as a 1.5 tonne Citroen but it holds its own. I've driven it from London to Bristol on the motorway and up and down the M5 and various A roads perfectly fine. Even at motorway speeds the iCar is still surprisingly fuel efficient.

There aren't many of these on UK roads, I've never seen one in the UK but there are a good fistful of them on Guernsey. Driving it in London you do notice people looking at it and taking a double take. The only bad things I can say about the iCar is the ride is a little hard and the water bottle for the windscreen jets is too small. Just because its a small car does not mean you can fit a half litre water jug.
