An increase in the number of spammers using shortened URLs to infiltrate computers with malware has been reported. Findings from MessageLabs, an email filtering service, showed that scams using this technique appeared in over two per cent of all spam during June, despite being almost non-existent in the previous two months. Shortened URLs, from websites such as TinyURL.com, allow cybercriminals to hide the real web address from users.
